What is image upscaler?
This tool enlarges a photo to 2x, 4x, 6x, or 8x its original width and height using a Lanczos-3 resample — a windowed-sinc filter that reconstructs each new pixel from a wide neighborhood of surrounding source pixels, rather than the simple bilinear blend a browser's default image resize uses. The result is noticeably sharper edges and finer detail than a plain drag-and-resize, especially on text, line art, and anything with hard edges, though it cannot invent detail that was never captured in the original photo the way a dedicated AI super-resolution model can — this tool trades that (much heavier, much slower) capability for something that runs instantly, on any device, with no model download. Drop in an image, pick a multiplier, and the resample runs in a background thread so the tab never freezes. The larger multipliers (6x, 8x) are capped more tightly than 2x/4x — meant for enlarging a small icon or avatar, not blowing up an already-large photo to an unreasonable size. Compare the result against the original with a drag slider showing the exact pixel dimensions of both — the "before" side is deliberately shown with no smoothing of its own, so the comparison is honest — then download it as PNG, JPEG, or WebP with the same quality/compression controls as this site's Image Compressor. Frequently asked questions
Does this use AI to add detail that isn't in the original photo?
No — this uses a Lanczos-3 resample, a high-quality mathematical resampling filter, not an AI super-resolution model. It produces noticeably sharper results than a plain browser resize by reconstructing each new pixel from a wide neighborhood of source pixels, but it cannot invent texture or detail that was never captured in the original image. An AI model can do that, at the cost of being far slower and requiring a large model download — this tool trades that capability for something instant and lightweight.
Does this upload my photo anywhere?
No. The entire resample runs locally in your browser, in a background thread so the tab stays responsive. Nothing you drop in is ever sent to a server — this is true of every tool on this site, not just this one.
Why does it only offer 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x, not any custom multiplier?
A fixed choice keeps the control a simple toggle rather than a free-typed number that could produce an unreasonably large (and slow, or memory-heavy) result. These four cover the overwhelming majority of real "enlarge this image" requests, from a modest bump to blowing up a small icon or avatar.
Is there a size limit?
Yes, two. The source file itself is capped at 25MB, the same limit as this site's other image tools. Separately, the *output* is capped at 40 megapixels regardless of the source file's size — a very large or mostly-solid-color image can decode to a huge pixel grid even from a small file, and enlarging that further could hang the tab or exhaust its memory. This cap bites much sooner at 6x/8x than at 2x/4x, by design — those larger multipliers are meant for small source images (icons, avatars), not for blowing up an already-large photo. If you hit the cap, try a smaller multiplier or crop/resize the source down first.
What file formats does this accept, and what does it output?
It accepts any common raster format your browser can decode — JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP. Output can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP, with the same quality slider and PNG lossless/lossy controls as the Image Compressor. An animated GIF or an SVG isn't accepted, for the same reasons the Image Compressor and Image Cropper don't take them either.
Will this make a blurry photo sharp again?
Not exactly — a Lanczos resample sharpens the *resizing* itself (avoiding the extra softness a plain bilinear resize adds), but it can't recover detail that was genuinely lost to the original photo's low resolution, heavy compression, or camera blur. It's best thought of as "the best possible resize," not "an unblur tool."
